Molester in Paradise

Even if you are intent on relaxing in an idyllic hut in the middle of Austrian nowhere, there is apparently no way of escaping the modern-day horrors. In Austrian magazine News (9/2006) we stumbled across what is a serious contender for the title of "sickest interview ever." Below we are documenting parts of the vile interview with self-hating jew Norman Finkelstein - both in an own English translation and in the German Original text.

News: Your book is being described as a pure defamation of Israel. (Ihr Buch wird als glatte Diffamierung Israels bezeichnet.)

Finkelstein: Generally I do not accept the concept of a Jewish state any more than that of a pure state for the white. But I have to add that as an old-fashioned leftist I do not deem Israel more illegitimate than other states. (Ich akzeptiere generell das Konzept eines Judenstaates genauso wenig wie das eines reinen Weißenstaates. Ich muss aber hinzufügen, dass ich als altmodischer Linker Israel generell nicht für illegitimer halte als andere Staaten auch.)

News: Don't your books come handy for enemies of Israel and anti-Semites? (...) (Kommen Ihre Bücher nicht deklarierten Israel-Feinden und Antisemiten gelegen? ...)

Finkelstein: (...) But today it is no longer the Jews who are victims, but the Palestinians. We should focus on their fate. I had to take the risk that some of my words would be used by some for their propaganda. But I can no longer stand those constant defense tirades for Israel: A jewish state who kills children, fires missiles into residential quarters, tortures - and jewish organizations who defend all that - that facilitates anti-Semitism! (... Aber heute sind nicht mehr die Juden Opfer, sondern die Palästinenser. Auf ihr Schicksal sollten wir fokussieren. Das Risiko, dass einige meine Worte für ihre eigene Propaganda missbrauchen, musste ich eingehen. Aber ich kann diese dauernden Verteidigungstiraden für Israel nicht mehr hinnehmen: Ein Judenstaat, der Kinder tötet, Raketen in Wohnvierte schießt, foltert, dazu jüdische Organisationen, die das alles verteidigen - das fördert den Antisemitismus!)

News: Isn't your book onesided when you publish long lists of Israeli offenses against the Palestinians but do not mention their [the Palestinian's] brutalities? (Ist ihr Buch nicht einseitig, wenn Sie lange Listen israelischer Vergehen gegen die Palästinenser vorlegen, deren Brutalitäten aber unerwähnt lassen?)

Finkelstein: (...) The Palestinians do not destroy israeli houses, do not torture prisoners, do not execute israeli leaders. The reason: Israel is a occupation power and not the other way round. (... Die Palästinenser zerstören nicht israelische Häuser, foltern keine Gefangenen, exekutieren nicht israelische Führer. Der Grund: Israel is eine Besatzungsmacht und nicht umgekehrt.)

News: The islamic world is protesting against the danish cartoons. Is the war of cultures also erupting elsewhere? (Die islamische Welt protestiert gegen dänische Karikaturen. Ist der Krieg der Kulturen auch anderswo ausgebrochen?)

Finkelstein: I would have wished for so much courage on the media's side when organizations of jews were up in arms against an 'anti-israeli' drawing in the New Statesman. Everybody ducked immediately and appologized. The whole campaign for freedom of the press is a case of hypocrisy as long as there are different standards for possible anti-Semitism and the slander of the prophet Mohamed as a bomb thrower. (Ich hätte mir von den Medien auch so viel Mut gewünscht, als Judenorganisationen gegen eine 'anti-israelische' Zeichnung im New Statesman Sturm liefen. Alle sind sofort in Deckung gegangen und haben sich gleich brav entschuldigt. Die ganze Kampagne ist Heuchelei, solange es unterschiedliche Standards im Umgang mit möglichem Antisemitismus und der Verunglimpfung des Propheten Mohammed als Bombenwerfer gibt.)

News: How will the future in the Middle East look after the election victory of Hamas? (Wie geht es nach dem Wahlsie der Hamas in Nahost weiter?)

Finkelstein: Now the clamor for a boycot of Hamas is big in the West. I cannot remember that there were similar protests when Israel elected mass murderer Ariel Sharon as prime minister. And the crimes Hamas is rightly being accused of, the USA took the responsibility of in just one week in Falluja. (Jetzt ist das Geschrei im Westen nach einem Hamas-Boykott groß. Ich kann mich nicht entsinnen, dass es ähnliche Proteste gab, als Israel mit Sharon einen Massenmörder zum Premier wählte. Und was man der Hamas zu Recht an Verbrechen vorwirft, haben die USA in einer Woche in Falludscha zu verantworten.)

News: What does Hamas mean for the peace process? (Was bedeutet die Hamas für den Friedensprozess?)

Finkelstein: I do not find their demands to be exaggerated at all: We are disarm? You disarm, too! You want us to stop attacking civilians? Than stop your attacks on our's! You want us to recognize Israel? No israeli government has ever recognized the right of the Palestinians to live within the borders the international community has envisioned. (Ich finde deren Forderungen gar nicht übertrieben: Wir sollen uns entwaffnen? Entwaffnet ihr doch auch! Ihr wollt, dass wir keine Zivilisten angreifen? Dann stellt eure Attacken auf unsere ein! Ihr wollt, dass wir Israel anerkennen? Keine israelische Regierung hat jemals das Recht der Palästinenser anerkannt, in den von der internationalen Gemeinschaft vorgesehenen Grenzen zu leben.)

News: Can the world allow Iran to manufacture an A-bomb? (Kann die Welt zulassen, dass der Iran eine A-Bombe herstellt?)

Finkelstein: (...) And regarding the threats: The people who are at the fore in the USA are lunatics and fanatics - and they threaten the world peace like no other nation. (... Und was die Gefahren betrifft: Die Leute, die hier in den USA am Ruder sind, sind Verrückte und Fanatiker - und bedrohen den Weltfrieden wie keine andere Nation.)

News: Are you serious? (Das meinen sie ernst?)

Finkelstein: Absolutely. The USA should be disarmed first. (Absolut. Die USA sollten als Erste entwaffnet werden.)

News: Austria recently had to return valuable paintings by Klimt. (Österreiche musste zuletzt wertvolle Klimt-Bilder retournieren.)

Finkelstein: (...) I cannot remember that my parents, who survived the holocaust, were much interested in restitution questions. They rather mourned their relatives who had been killed. The rich were able to save themselves and lost a few paintings and real estate. The poor died in the KZs. The whole art restitution question is only affecting a handful of people. (Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, dass meinen Eltern, die den Holocaust überlebten, übermäßig an Restitutionsfragen interessiert waren. Die trauerten eher um all die umgekommenen Verwandten. Die Reichen konnten sich retten und verloren ein paar Bilder und Immobilien. Die Armen starben in den KZs. Die ganze Kunstrestitutionsfrage betrifft eine Hand voll Leute.)
